Jacob Leo Husting's obituary appeared in The Hustisford Newspaper on 21 Jul 1916:
Young Man Meets Tragic Death
Kicked just below the heart by a horse he was unharnessing, Leo J. Husting, aged 32, Campbellsport manager for the West Bend Brewing company, died at 7 o'clock Friday evening at his home in Campbellsport.
He returned from a trip to the villages west of Campbellsport about 5:30 o'clock and he and his father, J. P. Husting, were in the barn together removing the harnesses from the team. One of the animals had a sore neck and when the son started to unfasten the collar the horse kicked.
The blow struck Mr. Husting just below the heart and knocked him down. He was dazed for a moment, then gasped a request for a drink of water. His father hurried to comply, and returned a moment later with Mrs. Husting, the young man's mother. They lifted him in a wheel barrow and took him to the house. Shortly afterward he lapsed into unconsciousness and at 7 o'clock he died.
His father states that he saw the horse kick his son but once, but two bad bruises, one below the heart and the other on his hip, were found.
Mr. Husting was born March 31, 1884 in Campbellsport and spent most of his life in the village. Some time ago he succeeded his father as local manager for West Bend brewery and held that position up to the time of his death. He was one of the most prominent and most popular young men of the village and his interest in public matters and matters of general welfare is denoted by the fact that he was a member of the Catholic Knights.
The funeral was held Monday morning at 10 o'clock from St. Matthew's church with interment at Union Cemetery, Rev. B July officiating.
Surviving Mr. Husting are his aged parents and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Schlaefer and Mrs. Frank Schlaefer. An older brother was shot accidentality while hunting about thirty years ago. - Fond du Lac Reporter.3
