DIED
     Leonard Hertel died last Monday night at the home of his son, Andrew Hertel, 610 Sixth Street, with whom he has made his home for quite some time. Deceased was 88 years of age, and was a native of Germany. In 1845 he located on a farm in the town of Ixonia, where he resided until removing to this city about 20 years ago. He leaves surviving him four sons and three daughters. Thursday morning his funeral took place from St. Henry's Church, and his remains were interred in St. Henry's Cemetery. Mr. Hertel was a well-known citizen, and had a large acquaintance who held him in the highest esteem. He was a man of unsullied character, and one who lived the life of the righteous at all times, and was ever mindful of the precept "do unto others as you would be done by." In his death, Watertown loses a most worthy citizen, and his family an honored and most dutiful father.2

     Surviving are three sisters, Miss Helen Hertel of Watertown, Mrs. Charles (Irene) Millmann of Wauwautosa, and Mrs. Samuel (Clara) Slaymaker of Beloit, two brothers, John of Chicago, Ill., and Andrew of Wauwautosa.
     She was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.2

Mathias Hertel, Wife Observe 25th Wedding

     Mr. and Mrs. Mathias (Matt) Hertel, 308 O'Connell Street, observed their 25th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
     They are the parents of seven sons: Peter and Michael, fifth and seventh grade students, respectively, in St. Henry's School; James, Joseph and John, freshman, junior, and senior students at Watertown High School; Robert, employed as a machinist at Hubbard Manufacturing, Helenville; and David, a teacher at Oconomowoc Junior High School.
     The occasion was celebrated on Sunday evening with a dinner at Otto's Inn. Present, besides the honored couple and their sons, were Mrs. Catherine Hertel, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Baurichter, Mr. and Mrs. August Jacquet, Mr. and Mrs. Lester Strege, Miss Joyce Hubbard, Mrs. Edward Lenze, and Elmer Olson.      
After dinner, the group enjoyed an evening of cards and dessert at the home of the honored couple.2

     Born April 11, 1918, in the Town of Watertown, the son of Mathias J. and Catherine (Engelhart) Hertel, he married Loretta Vorlob on Oct. 17, 1942, at St. Henry Catholic Church.
     A 1937 graduate of Johnson Creek High School, he had been employed at Brandt Inc. until his retirement in 1980.
     Mr. Hertel was a member of the 20 Year Club; the machinist union; the 105th Calvary Company E; St. Henry Catholic Church and the Watertown Recycling Committee. He served as AFL/CIO secretary-treasurer for many years, was a councilman for the City of Watertown and was active in recycling and salvage.
     Survivors include his wife; six sons, David (Lynnette), James (Joanne), Michael and Peter, all of Watertown, John (Purisima) of Jedda, Saudi Arabia, and Joseph (Ellyn) of Madison; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Hertel of Jefferson; 14 grandchildren; a brother, William (Lorraine); two sisters, Catherine Baurichter and Elizabeth (Leo) Reamer of Watertown' nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
     He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert.
     Funeral services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Hafemeister Funeral Home and at 5 p.m. at St. Henry Catholic Church, the Rev. Thomas Segerson officiating.
     Burial will be in St. Henry Catholic Cemetery.
     Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Thursday until the time of the service.
     Memorials may be given to the St. Henry building fund.1

     M.J. Hertel, 73, route 4, died Sunday morning at the Madison General Hospital after an illness of three weeks. He was born in Ixonia July 25, 1880, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Hertel. He had spent his entire lifetime in this area.
     His marriage to Catherine Engelhart took place in St. Henry's Church Nov. 27, 1912. She survives.
     Other survivors are two sons, Matthias Jr., Watertown, and William, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Herbert E. Baurichter and Mrs. Leo Reamer, both of Watertown; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, Walter and John, both of this city. Seven brothers preceded him in death.
     Mr. Hertel was a member of st. Henry's Church and of the Holy Name Society.
     The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock from Boyle's Funeral Home and at 9:30 o'clock at St. Henry's Church. The REV. A.J. Herrmann will officiate and burial will be in the parish cemetery.
     Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Ushers Society and parish rosary will be said Wednesday at 8 p.m.2

Mrs. Fischer Observes 91st Birthday Today
Mrs. Mechtilda Fischer, residing at 719 West Green Street, is today observing her 91st birthday. She is now one of the oldest women residents of Watertown. She is the widow of Bernhard Fischer who died some 34 years ago.
Born in the town of Ixonia, she is the former Mechtilda Hertel. Her parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hertel, pioneer residents of that section. She grew up in a pioneer home and knew the hardships and privations of those early days when much of this section was little more than wilderness. For the past 45 years she has been a resident of this city, but her entire life has been spent in and around Watertown.
Two children of her family are still living, a son, Andrew Fischer, and a daughter, Mrs. Frank Zabel. Both live here. Joseph Fischer, who for many years operated a grocery store on North Second street, passed away about five years ago.
Despite her 91 years, Mrs. Fischer is enjoying good health and remains quite active: She still takes an interest in affairs and is always glad to welcome old friends at her home. There was no special observance of her birthday today but she did receive messages of congratulation from her children and some old friends and neighbors.7

Mrs. Mechtilda Fischer, 92, one of this city's oldest residents, died early this morning at the home of her son, Andrew Fischer, 719 West Green street. She had been in failing health for the last several weeks.
She was born in the town of Ixonia on April 15, 1847, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Hertel. Her husband, Bernard Fischer, preceded her death 35 years ago and since that time she has been making her home with her son. She has resided in Watertown for 48 years. Before moving to this city, she lived near Watertown.
Surviving are one son, Andrew, and one daughter, Mrs. Frank Zabel. . DOdge street; 10 grandchildren 10 great grandchildren. These sons and three daughters.
Mrs. Fischer was the oldest and the last woman of her family. She was a kindly woman and devoted mother . Her passing will be learned with sorrow by the many who knew her and prized her as a friend.
Funeral Services will b held on Wednesday Morning at 9 o'clock at St. Henrys Catholic church. Friends may call to pay tier respects at the Boyle Funeral Home beginning at 9o'clock on Tuesday morning up to the time of the services on Wednesday.1

     St. Henry's Catholic Church was the setting for the ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 16m which united in marriage Miss Joyce Hubbard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Hubbard, route 1, Helenville, and Robert Hertel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Hertel, 308 O"Connell Street. Officiating the 2 p.m. service was Msgr. Anthony J. Herrmann.
     For her wedding, the bride chose a traditional floor - length gown of Chantilly lace. The bodice was designed with a natural waistline and long tapered sleeves. The bouffant skirt of lace ruffles fell to a chapel train at the back. A double crown of lace edged with seed pearls and crystal teardrops secured her veil of English silk illusion. She carried a bouquet of red roses with white pom pon cascade.
     Maid of honor was Nancy Rupprecht, sister of the bride. Linda Havlicek and Kathy Rothbarth were bridesmaids. Their identically styled floor - length gowns were of rouje red velvet designed with mini-bodices and satin back panels accented by flowers and leaves of satin. Thier headpieces were matching satin - looped bows with fourtier veils. Each carried a large spider mum with cascade of red carnations. Donna Rupprecht, niece of the bride, was the junior bridesmaid.
     David Hertel, brother of the groom was best man. Groomsmen were Thomas Havlicek and Evette Rothbarth. Robert Rupprecht, brother in law of the bride, and John Hertel, brother of the groom, ushered.
     The reception, dinner and dance were held at Wagies Lanes, Rome.
     The couple resides at 212 1-2 Rock Street.3 He an unknown place He was employed at Hubbard Manufacturing. before 22 April 1969 at Helenville, Jefferson County, Wisconsin.2

Robert Hertel Dies at 24; Funeral Services to be Held Friday
     Robert Hertel, 24, of route 1, Helenville, passed away this morning at the Watertown Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
     He was born on Jan. 10, 1945 in Watertown to Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Hertel. On Dec. 16, 1967, he married the former Joyce Hubbard of Helenville at St. Henry's Catholic Church. The couple made their home in Watertown until four months ago when they moved to their present address. Hertel was employed by Hubbard Manufacturing in Helenville.
     Survivors include his wife, one daughter, Mary Joan, at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mathias Hertel, Watertown; six brothers, David, John, Joseph, James, Michael, Peter, Watertown, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Catherine Hertel.
     Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Hafemaster Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Henry's Catholic Church, the Rev. A. J. Herrmann officiating.
     Friends may call to pay their respects at the funeral home from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday and on Friday until the time of service. The parish rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.2

     Miss Verena Hertel is Taken by Death Today
     Miss Verena Hertel, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hertel, died this morning at the family home,1039 Main street, following an illness. She was a native of Arvilla, N. D., but had spent most of her life in this city where her father was at one time a widely known business man, operating a shoe business on Main street.
     Miss Hertel was a former teacher and taught in the rural schools of Jefferson and Dodge counties for a number of years. She was a lifelong member of St. Henry's Catholic church.
     Five sisters and one brother survive, the Misses Flora, Eleanor and Isabel Hertel, this city; Mrs. Hugh P. Aud, Owensboro, Ky; Mrs. J. Vincent Cusick, Pittsburgh, PA; and Carl Hertel, Kohler, Wis.
     The funeral is to take place at 9 o'clock Friday morning in St. Henry's church. A solemn requiem high mass is to be sung. Burial will be in the family lot in the parish cemetery.
     Friends may call at the family home in Main street to pay their respects, Wednesday at 4 p.m. and up to the time of the service.
     The Boyle funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.3

Walter M. Hertel, 86, 300 South Washington Street, died Sunday morning at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Madison.
     
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Boyle-Helser Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church. Father William Craddick will officiate, Burial will be in St. Henry's Cemetery.
     Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the rosary at 8 p.m.
     Walter Hertel was born on Feb. 11, 1889 in the town of Watertown, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gottfried Hertel. He was engaged in farming in the Watertown area until his retirement in 1960. On June 4, 1919, he married the former Anna T. Ziener at St. Henry's Catholic Church.
     He was a veteran of World War I. a member of American Legion Post 189 and an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbus.
     Surviving are one son, Leonard of Watertown; three daughters, Lorraine and Lucille Hertel of Janesville and Mrs. Roger (Phyllis) Block of Watertown; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Leonard (Lenora) Hertel; a son-in-law, Roger Block and three grandchildren, Daniel, Charles and Amy Block. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1955 and two sons, Leon in 1937 and Philip in 1956. He was the last member of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers.4
